HART - BAKU EP - 12" VINYL
HART - BAKU EP - 12" VINYL
ill Records are proud to present BAKU, the brand-new EP from Nyphaea.
Nyphaea is the alter-ego of established ill Records artist, HART, who has
taken on the name as she explores new musical avenues. The Bangor-based
producer delivers a fresh body of work that continues to elevate her status
as an artist, while also allowing her to flourish in new areas of music.
Leaving HART’s hip hop roots behind her for this latest project, Nyphaea
steps into the world of UK garage. It’s a genre she has spent time embracing
and has found a natural habitat for herself in the process; something that
shines through on BAKU.
The title of the EP comes from Japanese folklore, where the BAKU is portrayed
as a mythical beast who devours nightmares. However, if the BAKU is left
hungry after the nightmares, it will go onto devour the hopes and dreams of
the person who summoned it.
Nyphaea’s sonic direction on the EP is a direct reflection of the source
material, encompassing the darker, brooding areas of the UKG spectrum, while
underpinning the whole project with a ghostly and sublime quality.
The intro and outro are rooted in the mythology surrounding the album’s
title, with elephant calls and pitched down vocal samples merging into eerie
scene setters. The body of the EP is comprised of four tracks that bond
together with an effortless cohesion, while still bursting with variety in
their separate forms.
Illusion is probably the lightest moment on the EP, but still laced with a
bassline that will make your bones shake. That same bass feeling continues
into Nowhere Fast, but with an added freneticism that brings an urgency to
the track. This takes us to Why, which is arguably the most traditional
garage vibe on the EP. It’s brimming over with atmosphere too, which lines it
up perfectly to achieve anthem status. That atmospheric feel is also obvious
on the final track, Runnin, while its rhythmic drums and pitched up vocals
evoke that good 90’s energy.
The EP ushers in a successful new era for Nyphaea, which also strengthens her
repertoire and will leave listeners wondering what other tricks she has up
her sleeve and where her musical exploration will take her next.
BAKU will be released both on digital and 12” vinyl.
